  • Bioluminescent biotechnology
  • Biosensors
  • Bioluminescence and bioluminescent assay
  • The methodology of scientific creativity
  • Tree-rings science in ecological research
  • Design Basics life support systems for long space flights

  • Fluorescence spectroscopy of biological molecules

    By Dr Elena V. Nemtseva

During the past 25 years there has been a remarkable growth in the use of fluorescent techniques in the life sciences. Fluorescence spectroscopy and time-resolved fluorescence are considered to be primarily research tools in biochemistry and biophysics. Fluorescence is now a dominant methodology used extensively in biotechnology, flow cytometry, medical diagnostics, forensics, and in the others fields. Fluorescence techniques are the most sensitive and the fastest, but their greatest advantages are very high spatial resolution and versatility.
This master course is focused on basic principles of fluorescence phenomena those underlie its uses in the biological and chemical sciences.

The main topics under consideration in this course are:

    • Fluorescence: basic definitions (Jablonski diagram; lows of fluorescence; main characteristics: emission and excitation spectra, fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yields, the Stokes shift; fluorescence quenching; fluorescence anisotropy; resonance energy transfer; steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence)
    • Intrinsic biological fluorophores (fluorescent enzyme cofactors, steady-state and time-resolved protein fluorescence)
    • Design and properties of fluorescence reporters (protein-labeling reagents, membrane probes, DNA probes, chemical sensing probes, fluorescent proteins)
    • Fluorescent sensing inside living cells and tissues (site-specific intracellular labeling, advanced nanosensors inside the cells, sensing the cell membrane)

    Bioluminescent biotechnology
    By Dr Elena V. Nemtseva

The main advantage of bioluminescence and chemiluminescence is the high detectability of the luminescence signal, which can be measured down to a few emitted photons using either a photomultiplier tube or a charge-coupled device imager. Analytical bioluminescence represents a versatile, ultrasensitive tool with a wide range of applications in biotechnology, pharmacology, molecular biology, clinical and environmental chemistry and in many others.

The main topics of this course are:

    • Bioluminescence: basic definitions (bioluminescence in nature, luciferases and luciferins, biochemistry and biophysics of bioluminescence)
    • Principles of bioluminescence for environmental monitoring
    • Bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET)-based assays
    • Reporter bioluminescent genes
    • Bioluminescence imaging
    • GFP and other fluorescent proteins application

    Lake ecology and management
    by Dr. Eger Zadereev
Lake is widespread and important aquatic ecosystems. To explain how lake ecosystem is functioning it is crucial to understand interactions between physical, chemical, and biological parameters. It is important to understand lake ecology because for many lakes there are number of often competing economic and non-economic values such as drinking water supply, biological resources, recreation, therapeutic and aesthetic value. Lake management strategies may be variable and depend on the specific environmental situation and the structure of lake ecosystem. The main aims of this course are: to explain lake ecology based on knowledge of physical limnology and limno-chemistry, the structure of food webs, trophic relationships and energy flows in food webs; to give knowledge on lake management strategies and the role of lakes in a regional economy.

    Corporate environmental management
    by Dr. Eger Zadereev
Environmental management is a broad and rapidly developing discipline. Cutting edge of environmental management is the series of environmental management standards prepared by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO 14000 standards). This series standardise the following key aspects of environmental management: environmental management systems, environmental audit, environmental performance evaluation, and life cycle assessment. Thus, a number of methods of this discipline are already used in practice. The proposed academic course will present a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of corporate environmental management. The main aims of this course are: to explain structure and function of different environmental management tools used in business; give broad picture of how and where these tools and methods are currently used or can be used in nearest future; give knowledge and basic practical skills for the application of these methods.
